NU Dept. of MusicProfessor Leon Janikian has been an academician, professional musician, and recording engineer for over 30 years. In 1976 he founded Sound Techniques Recording Studios. During the Sound Techniques years Prof. Janikian was the primary engineer/ producer for over 150 records in all musical genres, and numerous multimedia productions and commercials. In 1995, Professor Janikian was appointed an Assistant Professor of Music at Northeastern University. He continues to be very active in the recording field and is one the most sought after musicians specializing in the traditional music of Armenia, Greece, and the Middle East in the United States. Daniel Glass
Glassnote Records, Inc.It began when Daniel Glass became one of Brooklyn College radio station WBCRís hottest disc jockeys. In early 1983, Glass took his philosophy to Chrysalis Records as Director of New Music Marketing, advancing later to Senior Vice President. In 1989, Glassí success led him to become one of the first executives to join the newly formed SBK Records as Senior Vice President of Promotion, bringing his trademark aggressive, streetwise approach to the start up label. Glass was promoted to Executive Vice President/General Manager of SBK Records in 1990. In 1996, Glass and Doug Morris started Rising Tide Records, which later became Universal Records with Daniel Glass as President. In 1999 Daniel Glass joined Danny Goldberg at the newly emerging label Artemis Records as Executive Vice President. At a time when consolidation is dominating the music industry, there is an opportunity for independent labels to break through and make significant impact on this controlling climate. This has led Daniel Glass to start Glassnote, an entertainment company encompassing Glassnote Records, Music Publishing and Merchandising. Brett Woitunski
PureVolume.comLittle more than three years ago, while a design student at the University of Massachusetts, Brett Woitunski began to see artists, especially musicians shifting an increasing portion of their grassroots promotion to the internet. His friends in the music community were starting to embrace user-generated content platforms, online viral marketing and social networking. In PureVolume.com, he saw an opportunity to use his creative background to launch a community for musicians to leverage these powerful tools. On March 1st of this year, Brett and the team at Unborn Media are taking this concept a step further with the upcoming public launch of their social networking site Virb.com. Mark Kates
Fenway Recordings, Inc.Mark Kates has worked with significant recording artists for more than 20 years. An internship at Boston's WBCN and college radio led to work with Mission of Burma's label Ace of Hearts followed by Big Time Records in Los Angeles with artists like Love and Rockets and Alex Chilton. That led to 10 years at Geffen Records where he created the alternative promotion department and had a significant role in the development of that radio format. Kates then moved to a+r and signed Beck, Jawbreaker, Elastica, Alabama 3 and others. He brought Sonic Youth to Geffen and a+r'd them as well as Nirvana, Hole, White Zombie and many others. He left in 1998 to run Grand Royal Records for the Beastie Boys working with them, Sean Lennon and Luscious Jackson among others. In 2001 he returned to Boston and established Fenway Recordings, a label and music management company. Mission of Burma decided to reunite that year and he again works with them as well as Doves, The Cribs, Foreign Islands, Jake Brennan, and others. As DJ Carbo he co-founded seminal electronica night Atmosphere at The Viper Room in Los Angeles and hosts The Fenway Recordings Sessions in Boston.
