Barry Karger, Moderator The Barnett Institute, Director
Barry L. Karger received his B.S. in Chemistry from MIT in 1960 and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Cornell University in 1963. In 1973, he founded the Institute of Chemical Analysis, Applications and Forensic Science. In 1983, the name was changed to the Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis with a generous endowment gift from Lou Barnett and his family. The Institute, a leading international bioanalytical research center, now has a major focus in proteomics. Prof. Karger has been the Director of the Institute since its inception. Professor Karger has been an active researcher with over 300 publications in the field of separation science, with particular emphasis in liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. He also is the holder of 35 patents in these fields, a number of which have been commercialized. Research interests have focused on bioanalysis, including the development of HPLC and high performance DNA separation. His laboratory developed polymer matrices that were used for DNA sequencing in the Human Genome Project. At present, he has a major focus on cancer biomarker discovery in blood and tissue, which involve LC/MS and global generation of monoclonal antibodies.
Eric Summers NovoBiotic Pharmaceuticals
Eric Summers, MD PhD, is the Chief Scientific Officer at NovoBiotic Pharmaceuticals, LLC in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is a microbiologist and infectious diseases physician by training, as well as an experienced biotech entrepreneur. He has led efforts at all levels of antibiotic drug discovery, including assay development, screening, lead optimization, in vivo testing, and clinical trials. Prior to joining NovoBiotic Pharmaceuticals, Eric was Medical Director, Clinical Development, at Cubist Pharmaceuticals in Lexington, Massachusetts, and co-founder and Scientific Director of Antibiotic Discovery at Microbia Inc. in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Summers was previously a postdoctoral fellow at the Whitehead Institute in the lab of Gerald Fink, PhD, and he was a Fellow of Infectious Diseases at Harvard Hospitals in Boston.
Kim Lewis NU Dept. of Biology
Dr. Lewis is an expert in microbial drug resistance and drug discovery. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Moscow University and prior to coming to NEU in 2001 has been on the Faculty of MIT, University of Maryland and Tufts University. Dr. Lewis is the authors of over 100 publications, several patents and inventions licensed to the Industry. He is the co-founder of NovoBiotic Pharmaceuticals. The Company was founded to commercialize the invention of Drs. Lewis and Epstein to grow previously unculturable microorganisms as a source of new antibiotics. Other inventions of note include sterile-surface materials; synergistically-acting antimicrobials from medicinal plants; and a high-throughput method for drug screening in whole animals.
Douglas Fambrough Oxford Bioscience Partners
Since joining Oxford in 1999, Dr. Fambrough has specialized in financing innovative life science technology companies. His current projects include Cambrios Technologies, a developer of biologically-inspired electronic materials for the display industry, and Solstice Neurosciences, a neurology specialty pharmaceutical company. His past investments include RNA interference pioneer Sirna Therapeutics, acquired by Merck for $1.1 billion, and DNA sequencing company Solexa, acquired by Illumina for $600 million. Prior to Oxford, Dr. Fambrough was a genomic scientist at the Whitehead/MIT Center for Genome Research. He graduated from Cornell University and obtained his Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California, Berkeley.
William Barbo
Charles River Laboratories
William D. Barbo is Corporate Vice President, Research Model Services for Charles River Laboratories, joining the company in 1982. Bill holds an MS in Cell Biology from the University of Massachusetts, an MBA from Northeastern University, and a BS in Biology from Boston College. Bill began his career at Charles River as a research scientist. He was instrumental in the development and launch of several new and innovative product and services businesses during his tenure, and is current responsible for overseeing the world wide operations of the company’s Research Services businesses representing nearly $100M in sales with 500 employees on 3 continents. He is very active in local community civic organizations and serves on the Arts and Sciences Board at Mt. Ida College.
Ganesh Venkataraman Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Dr. Ganesh Venkataraman is the scientific co-founder of Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading biotechnology company focused on the detailed structural analysis and design of complex sugars for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Prior to founding Momenta, Dr. Venkataraman was a research faculty member at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and later at the Division of Biological engineering at MIT. Dr. Venkataraman served as the Director of Bioinformatics for the Consortium for Functional Glycomics, a multi-million dollar NIH initiative to study the role of complex sugars in biology. Dr. Venkataraman won the 1999 and 2000 CaPCure Research Award to study the role of complex polysaccharides in prostate cancer. He is also the recipient of the Boston Business Journal’s “40 under 40” award for the most promising entrepreneurs in the Boston area (2002) and the Global Indus Technovator award (2004) for endeavors at the frontiers of technological innovation.
